“It is time to voice our choice!” This is what thousands of individuals with disabilities and their families, known as the A-Team, proclaimed on the second annual National Day for Choice on Tuesday, April 16th. advocating for the right to choose where they work, live and engage in the community; not where government agencies direct them. Members of A-Team promoted events throughout the country to promote their message for “choice”. Wisconsin’s 12 A-Team chapters hosted rallies, broadcasted on local radio stations and stormed social media platforms with videos and testimonials from self-advocates and family members. Our very own Patti L., a client at KANDU, was interviewed by former state representative Joel Kleefish for A-Team Wisconsin’s social media video campaign. Patti discussed her job at KANDU and why she enjoys working. Members of the Portage A-Team chapter visited Madison to meet with state lawmakers to raise awareness of workers with disabilities.
Originating in Fort Atkinson, the A-Team is a national movement uniting individuals with diverse abilities and their family members to advocate in a grassroots effort, creating awareness in the community and advising those who care for our citizens with special needs to ensure service choices and opportunities.
