On Wednesday, January 10th, Julie Smith, KANDU Program Director, two KANDU client workers and a KANDU Board Member/Parent traveled to Madison for hearings by both the Senate and Assembly on a bill called Employment First. Although the bill heavily stresses Competitive Integrated Employment, through the efforts of the A TEAM, language was added to also indicate the need for pre-vocational services. Both houses were very receptive to the idea of choice in the work setting and asked pointed questions of the bill’s author, representative Edming, ensuring that the bill would not affect Community Rehabilitation Programs like KANDU. There was powerful testimony by A TEAM members, families and other advocates. We packed both the Senate and Assembly and forced the use of overflow rooms. It was a good day for those of us that represent and serve individuals with disabilities.
The A TEAM joins individuals with disabilities and their family members to advocate in a grassroots effort, creating awareness in the community and advising others to ensure service choices are protected and sustained.
