What is Dragons on the Rock: Contest of Creativity?
Dragons on the Rock is an annual dragon boat race and festival, first held in September of 2019 with all proceeds benefiting KANDU Industries in Janesville, WI. Due to COVID-19 and keeping everyone safe, we’ve reinvented this fun, family oriented event to an art contest, encouraging a range of creative interests.
This 2020 online event is a friendly arts and music competition for all ages! Spark your imagination, have fun collaborating ideas with your family and friends, and if you joined us last year, reminisce about the magic and excitement of Dragons on the Rock 2019! As we look to 2021, KANDU has already scheduled Dragons on the Rock with the hopes that Contest of Creativity will engage more dragon boat teams, awareness of the event and increased community participation!
When is Dragons on the Rock 2021?
We are hopeful that Dragons on the Rock will return as an in person, dragon boat race and festival. The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 18th, 2021 from 9am to 6pm at Traxler Park in Janesville, Wisconsin. More information will be shared early next year.
Who can participate in the Contest of Creativity?
Everyone of all ages is encouraged to participate!
When can I submit my creation(s)?
The website will be available for submissions on October 1st at 12:00am and will close on November 30 at 11:59 pm.
How much does it cost?
Registration for each contest is $20. You can enter as many as you like!
How do I enter?

If this is a fundraiser, what do the proceeds benefit?
KANDU Industries, Inc. is a non-profit that provides a wide range of opportunities for people with disabilities and disadvantages in Rock County, Wisconsin. All proceeds benefit KANDU, to continue their mission.
Is this tax deductible?
There could be a portion of the entry fee that is tax deductible. Please contact your tax advisor for more information.
On what criteria will my creation(s) be judged?
All submissions will be judged on originality, overall talent and the creative ability to portray the spirit of dragon boat racing/festivals. Poster designs and theme songs must encompass both KANDU’s mission and the original Dragons on the Rock event/dragon boat racing. Check out the website and videos from the 2019 event for inspiration!
Who will determine the winners?
Contest finalists will be chosen by the general public via online voting. Once your submission is approved, spread the word to all your friends and family to vote! Votes cost $1 each and voters can purchase up to 100. 2019 Dragons on the Rock dragon boat team captains will determine the final winners.
When will the winners be announced?
Winners will be announced Live on the KANDU Industries Inc. Facebook page Saturday, December 12th at 10am! Each winner will also be contacted directly.
What are the prizes?
Each 1st place winner will receive $500 off a dragon boat team registration fee for Dragons on the Rock 2021-or- VIP tent access, which includes lunch, snacks and soft drinks throughout the event. 2nd place winners receive $250 off a boat team registration fee.
If you aren’t local or unable to participate in next year’s dragon boat race, you can choose to sponsor a client boat instead! Your name or company logo will be featured on team t-shirts and signage.
Poster Design Contest: The winning design will be used for all marketing materials including a Lamar billboard.
Drumming Competition: The winner will receive the opportunity to perform a drum solo and introduce the drumming competition at Dragons on the Rock 2021.
Theme Song: The winning song will be the official Dragons on the Rock theme, used for advertising and played during the event. The winner will also have the honor of awarding medals during the 2021 dragon boat race winners ceremony.
How many submissions are allowed?
Artists can submit one entry, per contest. Though you can participate in all 3 contests!

I submitted my file(s), but don’t see it displayed on the site. Where is it?
KANDU marketing staff reviews all submissions before they are posted to the general public to ensure adherence to our few but necessary guidelines.
I would like to support this event, but am not interested in submitting to the contest. Can I participate in other ways?
Yes! Not only can you vote for your favorites in each category, but you can become a sponsor to receive recognition and directly support KANDU’s mission.
