The first annual dragon boat race and festival, Dragons on the Rock, held on September 14th at Janesville’s Traxler Park, was a phenomenal day for everyone involved. 12 teams competed in heats throughout the morning and afternoon, rowing in sync to the beat of their drummer. Congratulations to the top 3 winning dragon boat teams:
1st Place – Mercyhealth
2nd Place – Oar We There Yet (Data Dimensions)
3rd Place – Johnson Financial Group
Boat team drummers participated in a drumming competition, showing off their creative costumes and rhythmic talents. Congratulations to KANDU’s own Michael Blanca, who was the overwhelming crowd favorite and competition winner.
Alongside the races, kids participated in dragon boat land races, colored t-shirts and played in the bounce house. Adults enjoyed the beer and wine tent, featuring a selection of wine pouches from Timber Hill Winery and local brews from Rock County Brewing and Gray Brewing Company. The two breweries even collaborated to introduce an exclusive brew for the event: an amber ale spiced with chai and vanilla, named Dragons on the Rock for the event. This delicious beer is on tap at the Gray Brewing Tasting Room and will also be available for purchase at our upcoming Fish Fry & Harvest Buffet, with proceeds benefiting KANDU. A wide variety of over a dozen food trucks were also present throughout the day, as well as live music by 90 Proof, Bree Morgan, John Nelson, Mackenzie Benish of Prone to Sorrow, and Candace Griffin.
A special thank you to Pat Lyons and Lycon Inc, Rock County Aqua Jays, Janesville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, 22Dragons, United Way Blackhawk Region, and all of our amazing boat teams, sponsors, donors, volunteers, vendors and spectators!
