How KANDU’s Adult Day Services helps older adults build friendships, find purpose, and gives families greater peace of mind
Some of the most meaningful parts of the day do not happen in silence. They happen around a table, in conversation, in familiar routines that quietly rebuild confidence and connection.
As we age, one of the most powerful influences on our well-being is not found in a prescription. It is found in relationships. Daily interaction, routine, and a sense of belonging play a critical role in cognitive health, emotional stability, and overall quality of life. Yet for many older adults, those connections can gradually fade.
At KANDU Industries, the Adult Day Services program helps older adults rediscover purpose, friendship, and the comfort of a routine, often in ways families and caregivers notice immediately at home.
For Alice, that journey began with someone taking the time to notice what she needed.
Each week, approximately 45 individuals are welcomed into something steady and familiar. They are known by name. They are expected. And when they are not there, they are missed. Over time, routines begin to carry meaning again. A seat at the table becomes familiar. Days that once felt uncertain begin to take on rhythm and purpose.
What follows is something quieter, but more powerful. Familiar faces. Easier conversation. A sense of ease that grows with time.
That kind of progress does not happen by accident. It happens because staff take the time to know each person, noticing small changes and adapting support to help them succeed.
When Alice first joined KANDU’s Adult Day Services program, she was quiet and largely disengaged from what was happening around her. She observed more than she participated, unsure where she fit in. Staff took time to get to know her, listening carefully and recognizing that her schedule did not align with the times she was most comfortable and receptive.
Once her days were adjusted to better match her natural rhythm, something began to change.
Alice came out of her shell and found herself drawn to others who shared similar interests. Before long, she had found a group of friends and a place where she felt comfortable simply being herself.
Today, one of her favorite parts of the day is sitting around the table playing cards with friends she now knows well. There is laughter in those moments, the sound of cards being shuffled, and the easy conversation that comes from spending time with people who genuinely enjoy being together. These may seem like small moments, but they have become the highlights of her week.
Her daughter describes the change in simple, heartfelt terms. Alice now talks at home about the games she played, the prizes she won, and the activities she looks forward to. She marks her days at KANDU on the calendar and makes sure everything is packed so she will not miss them.
For her family, the transformation reaches far beyond the program itself. The weight of worry has eased, replaced by the comfort of knowing she is not only safe, but engaged, valued, and surrounded by people who truly know her.
As our community continues to age, the need for programs like this continues to grow. In Rock County alone, approximately 3,700 seniors are currently living with dementia, and that number is expected to double by 2040. Behind those statistics are families working every day to preserve independence, identity, and dignity for the people they love.
Research continues to reflect what families often witness firsthand. Structured routines, meaningful social interaction, and engaging activities can support cognitive well-being, reduce anxiety, and improve overall quality of life. When people feel connected to others and to their daily routines, they are better able to remain engaged in the world around them.
At its heart, KANDU’s Adult Day Services program is about far more than providing care during the day. It is about creating a place where people feel welcomed, valued, and connected. A place where friendships grow, confidence returns, and every individual is reminded that they belong.
With continued support, more individuals like Alice can find not just a place to spend the day, but a place where someone is saving them a seat at the table.
